Some Uncommon House Roofing
There are different kinds of roofing. Below are some of the more uncommon roofs created by roofers; most only seen in antique houses. These roofs are originally made to give use more than add beauty to the house.
Rooting its name from architect Francois Mansart, the Mansard roof was first popularized in France in the 1600’s. Physically, a Mansard roof can be depicted because of two distinct slopes found on each side of the roof. Normally, this roof is made for house owners who want to use the space underneath the roof as an attic. It becomes an extra story of the house where the guest rooms are usually found. The additional space that does not make-up a room is called a garret. It was popular in North America during the 1800’s as part of Victorian style of architecture.
Similar to a Mansard, the Saltbox roof was made by people who wanted to use the roofing as another story of the house. The main difference is the diagonal peak that it creates, in contrast to the flat peak of a Mansard. The room, then, has a slanting ceiling where the lowest part can only contain small things. Saltbox was made as a variation of Colonial and Cape Cod style of architecture and was popular between the 1600’s and the 1800’s.
